Philip Wharton Mystic - Philip A. Wharton, 71, of 6 School St., Mystic, formerly of Reading, Mass., died Monday morning at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London after suffering a stroke Friday. He was born in Boston, Mass., on June 28, 1933, the son of Cornelius and Bertha Flynn Wharton.
He was the husband of Jane Woods Wharton, whom he married in St. Ignatius Church on Sept. 6, 1958. She survives.
Mr. Wharton graduated from Holy Cross in 1956, and received his law degree from Boston College School of Law in 1959. He practiced law in Boston, specializing in real estate development.
He was a communicant of St. Athanasius Church in Reading prior to moving to Mystic last February. He was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to the Red Sox and Patriots.
He was a Boston lawyer without the typical trappings. He didn't drive a sports car or have golf days with "the guys." Instead, he drank a cup of coffee while looking at his beloved New Hampshire mountains, and then shoveled a path to bring a carload of kids to the slopes.
He moved through life without rushing and fanfare. He had time to talk and joke. He never passed one of his children without giving them a pat on the head or a hug. He always had room for one more; in his house, his car, or at his table.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Philip Wharton, and his wife, Paula, of Cambridge, Mass.; three daughters, Mary Neilan, and her husband, Christopher, of Waterford, Christine Wharton, of Lowell, Mass., and Jennifer Wharton-Hsieh, and her husband, Patrick, of Honolulu, Hawaii; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Patrick and Timothy Neilan of Waterford, Emily, Sarah and Allison Wharton of Cambridge, Mass., and Emma, who was born Monday in Honolulu. He is also survived by two sisters, Jane Kelleher, of Greenwich, and Marcia Rock, of Sarasota, Fla.
The funeral will assemble at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic, and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church at 11 o'clock. Interment will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic, following the Mass. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the St. Joseph School Endowment Fund, 17 Squire St., New London, CT; or to St. Mary Star of the Sea School, 10 Huntington St., New London, CT.
